Simplicity 1724 Fleece Jacket with Matching Hat Sewing Pattern Review
Description: Toddlers’ jumper or top, jacket, fleece hat and knit leggings, and hat in three sizes. (I made the fleece jacket with matching hat, omitting the flower on the hat).
Pattern Sizing: 6 mo. – 12 mo. – 2T – 3T – 4T (I made the pattern in size 3T).
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes. It looked exactly like the pattern photos.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. This is an “easy-to-sew” pattern. Living up the name, the instructions were very easy to follow.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I made a size 3, so my niece had room to grow. She was a 2T. The pattern was true to size. The sleeves needed to be rolled up and the jacket was as big as I expected, which was exactly as I expected.
I really liked how the photo on the pattern envelope was exactly how the jacket and hat looked when they were completed. The mitten pocket detail was especially cute.
The only down side, which isn’t really a down side, just a word of caution: If sewing the jacket in fleece, the ruffle section gets pretty bulky, not difficult to sew, just bulky.
Fabric Used: Fleece in purple and pink. (Exactly like the photo on the pattern).
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I would definitely recommend this pattern to anyone sewing an outfit and jacket for a little girl. The design is cute and girly, without being over done.
Conclusion: This is an “easy-to-sew” pattern. I used a combination of serger and standard sewing machine. A serger was not necessary, just gave the jacket interior seams a nice finish, since the jacket was not lined. I made the pattern in size 3T for my niece, who was a size 2T. The finished outfit fit as expected. The directions and illustrations were clear and concise. I am an experienced at sewing, which made this project go together quickly.
I made the fleece jacket in purple fleece with contrasting pink pockets. I omitted the flower on top of the hat. The finished jacket looked exactly like the jacket on the pattern envelope. I really enjoyed the ruffle detail and the mitten pockets. I also liked the tassels on the hat.
The fleece for the ruffle shoulders is a little bulky when sewing together, but still went together easily. I think this jacket would be adorable in lighter fabric, too. For a Spring or Fall, light jacket, I would omit the pockets and hat. I would whole heartedly recommend this pattern.
